Happy Holy week to all...

I just want to say I met up with Jimmy Benny again last week at my house and we spend a good hour talking about everyone we knew on Archer and brought up a lot of names and a lot of memories... some I kind of blocked out .....many nights I guess I forgot because of too many ten cents beers at the Ram's Head.
Anyway we had a great time it felt just like old times.. Jimmy was the first person I met when I started working in Pioneer.
Jimmy was kind of right Jery did give me a lot of the big tippers...
Linda Thanks for the Dancing Mouse E-Mail Very Funny...

I guess you read my run in with the mouse story that Jimmy Benny wrote

Thanks for reninding me Jimmy.
Anyway hope everyone is well and hope to see some of you next time there is a gathering.

Hi Todd,

I remember that day with Joey. My opinion is that the best place to play curb ball was on the corner of Leland and Archer diagonally across from Stanley's cleaners. When it was really hot we would stop in to see Jimmy and get cold water. Jimmy was in the back of the store pressing clothes. It was hot as help back there so he had a frig to keep cold water in. Miss those days.

Frankie always had the most money from deliveries. Jerry would give him ALL of the good tippers. The rest of us got the .50 $1.00 tippers. Frankie got the $3.00- $4.00 tippers.. In reguard to Frankie and the mouse, one day Frankie was in the stock room and he bent over to pick up what he thought was a brillo pad. It wasn't. I never saw Frankie move so fast, out of the stock room and out the front door!

Hi Joe:

I have to agree with you on Sister Labore. She was very sadistic. I suffered from her deadly hands many a times. And that bell she would and ring and ring until you were deaf. Looking back I would have to say she had some issues and I know for a fact there were alot of complaints about her being to rough on kids. I do not like to talk ill of her but, had my kids been in that situtation I would have forgot that I was a gentleman and she was a nun. Bobby Roth

i wish sr laboure peace in heaven forever-forgive me, but i agree with mattie on this one, she was a nun who gave kids serious mental problems as they got older-, i feel-her form of discipline was a bit sadistic--i only remember her slapping kids all over the hallway--don't get me wrong, i have a son and two granddaughters, and there is nothing wrong with discipline, but her form of discipline was just plain sick--sorry to be so blunt but i really don't have fond memories of her at all--she would put the fear into hulk hogan--
i wish for the friendly repose of her soul because i know she thought she was molding kids for the future and i really don't think she did things maliciosly in her mind--i just don't agree with her methods..they were simply destructive for young kids-sorry..but that's how i feel

The best corner for playing curb ball was on Leland & Guerlain in front of Henry & Mikey Grammazios house.
The curb had a flat spot as well as a point so if you became an expert, like many of us thought we were, you could hit a ground ball, line drive or fly ball at anytime depending wher you aimed.Especially if you play with running bases. If you missed you'd hit the Gramamzio's house.
I taught the neighborhood(if you call it that) suburban kids how to play curb ball about 10 years ago and I still see them playing in the 'burbs by me.
But the best curb ball story is we were playing and Joey Anastasio was up and he hit a ball and ran for a double. He had to slide into the sewer cap that was second base. As he was in he slide he screamed: Oh..Sh*t!!!. Apparently he didn't see the pile of dog crap right in the middle of "second base". The funniest part was Joey lived in the basement apartment about 10 steps from second base. Without stopping he slide into the dog gift, popped up and ran into his house.

Now that's a real crappy story...sorry for the awful pun...couldn't resist

Hello to my old and new friends, just want to add to this, being that I was living on theiriot and guerlain. Those 4 corners were great playing curb ball with the best spalding balls, when we couldn't get into playing in the handball court. The things that we did in the alley ways and roofs what fun we had!!. We never got bored.

Hello all: Joe B. In a day or two I'll write something about those basements, I'm sure there a bunch of stories from many others. BINGO: Pat you got it. Thieriot Avenue between Guerlain and Archer was at times also a "Play Street". I'd imagine P.S. 102 had something to do with the closing of the street for safety of the kids going to scool there. But, I remember the kids would roll out that sign whenever they just wanted to take over. Sort of like an "Adverse Possession" or "Eminent Domain" for kids. There was a 5 or 6 foot "Play Street" sign which was on a pole on a round concrete base. The black and white sign was on the corner sidewalk of Thieriot and Guerlain and would be sort of rolled out into the middle of the street to block traffic and the street was like Trix "Just for Kids" with no cars. I guess after the playground was built there was no longer a need for the "Play Street". I have a personal story of the sign. When I was about 4 or 5 years old we had a neighbor, Rita Viterelli, and at 5 O'clock evry day I would sit on the concrete sign base and wait for Rita to come home from work. She was so kind and would always have a nice word to say. In fact, one night my Dad took a picture of me sitting there. Just another, Sign of the Time, of a unique feature of our neighborhood. Have a Good Day, Here comes the Sun" Yipeee, lets get out and go to "Play Street". Be well. Love, Peace and Happiness, Matt Keenan

Marie-Elena: Glad you like the skate key, it was my pleasure. Now, as far as your answer. I like the way you think but it's not the right answer. My memory of St. Anthony's was that we had to stand in line with our class at a particular class spot on the sidewalk, and there was no playing in the street. In fact even going home from school we had monitors who made sure we marched down Mansion in double file till we reached Beach and we then went all over the place to our homes. So, sorry Mansion Street is not the name of the Street and I still need to know the alias that was written on the sign. Keep trying you did good and I like your courage to give it a shot. does anyone remember hanging out in the alley ways behind the buildings--it was like a different world--i remember our super, mr mcpadden--we used to torture that poor soul--he had a pipe in his mouth and with a thick iris brogue, you never knew what he was saying--he just came at you with a broom handle-i used to keep my bike in the back of his downstairs apt in the storage room--it was like entering the twilight zone--if he saw you, he gave you a whole lot of crap and all you said was have a nice day and run--"the good old days"

Hey michael butler,
do u recall that the back of the green house, had the garage doors & an incline for a driveway. sometimes 1 of us would stop there to catch our breathe from riding our bikes or roller skates very quickly. i had a friend who knew a guy named david,or i think that was his name.his parents moved into the green house just before i left beach. it was the only time i had ever been in the little green house.after all those years. wasn't the owner of the gas station named rocky? i still remember your dad taking tools out, to help us make go carts. you have to admit guerlain was one tough hill.but we had tons of fun riding bikes, roller skates and go carts down it. stay safe old & dear friends.

First, to Linda Hall: You may remember me, but I am not the Butler you remember jogging around with my sister. That was Marianne who jogged with Marguerite, the youngest girl sibling of the Butlers. We moved out of 4F and into 2L around 1970. I got married in 1973, and then lived on Overing Street, near Lehman High School, and Tremont Ave. I don't remember you, but maybe if I saw your face, I would.
Secondly to my brother Michael: The family that lived in that Green House between the gas station and our building was originally owned by a dentist and his family. The name was Dr. Meglino. His wife had red/orange hair, used to be a nurse, and chewed gum all the time. They had four children, Edward, Angela, I can't remember the next sister's name, I'm thinking Donna, and the youngest sister was Melanie. I was friends with Angela. They went to St. Dominick's School. I remember when Angela's mother became pregnant with Melanie. Donna was already around 8 or 9 years old. Gail was friends with Donna who was her age.

One day in my eight grade class Sister Theresa was acting in her usual way and picking on a boy in class. It was not just this one time it was constantly.Every single day this guy was being abused to a magnitude of out of your mind crazy.Well she met her match he could not take it any more and stood up and punched her right smack in the chest.I hate violence of any kind Susanne but I feel justice was served. You could not hear a pin drop in that class that day and God bless him he did not get into any trouble.Well it does go to show you with that kind of treatment what you can expect.Well have a good day and stay safe all!!

Who were the families that resided in the green house between the gas station and my bldg (1574). I recall a little girl named Melanie and then another family with a boy named Rocky (I think). The last family living there were the Donally's, in 1977. I believe Kenny would know.

hello old & new friends,
so glad to see some old friends on the site. i also remember the "associated". but that it really didn't get filthy, until i was in my teens. mom always made it to all the neighborhood supermarkets. from a & p, pioneer & then to associated.regarding all the dogs mentioned lately. i have to say sue's dog belle was a sweetie. maybe because i lived next door & use to sneak her treats, as well as pet her & talk with her. she was one of the most beautiful german shepherds i have ever seen. sylvani's dog didn't really scare me. but lisa & julie luciano had spottie, who was the smallest attack dog i ever saw. but learned to love. i think spot was tougher than the 2 shepherds together. julie: thanks for bringing back memories of spottie. does anyone from the upper beach ave crew remember how we use to ride over the wire at the gas station on the corner, just to hear the bell ring & drive the mechanics crazy? take care dear friends & stay well.

Matt Keenan I'd have to agree with you regarding Sr. Laboure. I never got into trouble, and she was the only sister to ever hit me The nuns were never into stories of explanation. We were told to be quiet and to make as little noise as possible walking down the stairs because you could hear the noise in the church. Well I tripped, and almost fell.
I grabbed onto Mary Jane Ellison's shoulder and got my bearings, but Mary Jane turned around and said:"Don't push!" I told her I wasn't pushing and that I almost fell.
Sr. Laboure rushed up that staircase by her office and swiftly sl.pp.d me right across the face reminding me:"I said no talking!" I don't remember any pain, only the noise of the slap, and the volume of her voice.

Hello all: I was never in this Associated and/or Safeway but I liked it better when it was an empty lot. Oddly, those lots were a lot of fun. I guess they built the store in about 1961. Sorry to hear about Sister Laboure. We have a ton of stories of our trials and tribulations with her. Sorry, but I can't say I was very fond of her. I didn't find her to be very fair as she was the master disciplinarian ruling with the fear of the unforgiving ruler measuring pain not inches. But, I'm sure it wasn't an easy task managing all our antics either. I certainly will never forget her and may she rest in peace. May you all have Love, Peace and Happiness and have a lovely Spring. Some of those customers were good tippers.

Sylvani's dog was named King. I remember the stories that he was part wolf. I also agree that King seemed like a pussycat compared to Sue's dog Belle. Although I think our old dog Spotty was the only one I ever remember biting anyone. Spotty was a Boston terrier, weighed about 10lbs but she bit my one of my best friends (Annette Amato) when she was at our apartment. Another time at a party at my house Spotty went after Roy Metzger and he jumped on the back of our sofa to get away from her.

I just heard from Chris Heaphy that Sister Laboure passed away on March 16th at the ag of 93. If anyone doesn't remember her she was our 7th grade teacher in 1959 then she became principal of St. Anthony's for awhile. She was very tough but also very caring. Actually she was my favorite nun in the school. I will never forget her.

Lisa, you are so right about the cleanliness issue of Super A, or Associated as it was called back then. My mother would shop there as a last resort, even though we would pass it every day on the way to St. Anthony's. It did seem dirty and messy most of the time.

Belated HAPPY ST.PATRICK'S DAY to one and all...<:~)

Just got back from attending the gala event of the year in Panama City Beach Florida... Tommy and Laura(Fitzgerald)Andersons' son Christopher tied the knot on St Patrick's Day...The outdoor ceremony in a beautiful waterfront park(70degrees) was officially presided over by none other than, believe it or not,Gary(The Goomer)Hillyard...Christopher clad in a kilt alongside his lovely bride Teri made for a wonderful sight...it was a grand grand Paddy's Day...one I'll never forget...<:~)

It was so enjoyable reminiscing with Gary about all the crazy "stuff" that took place in the neighborhood in the 60's & 70's, The Beer Bar, Sullivans, The Hamptons, St Anthony's, The Rams, The Pot Belly Pub, The C'mon Inn, etc. were but a few of the topics discussed...

I would be remiss not to mention the great pre-wedding/Paddy's Day party thrown by Chris's lovely Aunt Judy...Judy's soda bread is without a doubt THE finest I've ever tasted(an old Irish recipe from Patty Sullivans mom)...I'm still waiting for the recipe..<:~)

does anyone remember the grocery store that was at the end of Archer & Beach Ave in 1964, this was my first memory of growing up in the Bx. My aunts & cousins lived in the building to the right of the store. We had moved up to the Bx from MD and my mom was trying to find a place to live. We stayed at my grandparents & aunts & uncles all over the Bx till 65. When we finally moved in it was on Theiriot ave, and we saw that it was an apt building we wanted to leave but my mom stood her ground and told all 5 of her children and said we are staying. My mom obviously knew she made the right choice. Thinking back, it was a lot of fun!! "Happy Spring" to all my old & new friends.

Hi Matt:
I think Ed Sylvani's dog was either named Prince or King.
I kind of tried to go back in time and these two names keep coming up in my mind. Shame on me as I used be in that store all the time and I should know. Too many years and the aging process I guess. That big german sheperd was loud and scary but if you got know him and Mr.Sylvani told him it's okay he would actually let you pet him.

Well, Well, Well; Claire's mention of Sylvani Bike Store and request for stories about those that did not have a bike brought more stories about those who had a bike than didn't and a german shepard, "Sylvani's Dog". Some nice stories about Sylvani, very nice. It just goes to show, how one neighborhood can expand Claire's Mom's concern for safety to stories about a dog. So, it would be intersting to see other subtle references and see where they can lead us. I personally don't even remember the dog but remember being afraid of the bull dog owned by the owner of "Leanard's" who lived at 1549? Leland. That dog was always barking behind the driveway fence and looked like he would bite your feet off. I also remember packs of stray dogs roaming the neghborhood with there poops evidencing there presence, but that was before pooper scooper laws. But, as usual, I have a trivia question about a dog I personally didn't know existed and for which I don't have the answser. WHAT WAS THE NAME OF SYLVANI'S GERMAN SHEPARD? I'm sure it wasn't "the dog". Thanks to Claire for a question that has went from no bikes to bikes to a dog. Be well, Love, Peace and Happiness, Matt Keenan

Hey Todd,
The reason why that dog didn't bite you, was because you were too skinny. Sylvani always had bones for him. he didn't need a skinny kid to bite. only kidding. That dog had a nasty growl, but when he knew you,he would let you pet him. I remeber giving him some fresh water 1 time from a hydrant that somebody had opened. after that I was never afraid of him anymore. I am so glad we had sylvani, just around the corner. Because 1 of us, was always damaging our bikes. Especially, one of the guys. Someone was always "DARING" someone to do some crazy stunt. How 1 of us didn't get seriously hurt, I will never know. Or how many carriage wheels we used to make our go-carts, with the assistance of Mr. Butler. stay safe Old & New Friend. Thanks for all the memories.

Hi Everyone! HAPPY SAINT PATRICK'S DAY TO ALL! Saint Paddy's Day in the old neighborhood was always a blast. I always wore my green. I remember year walking down Beach Avenue wearing a green turtle neck, green brushed denim pants and green socks. Can't remember how old I was, but if I was going down Beach it could have been one of three destinations: St. Anthony's on a day we didn't have to wear our uniforms; The Beer Bar (hehe-good possibility) or Kenny Steininger's house (my other second home besides Marie Elena's). I also remember one year Kenny and I were driving around in his red VW bus, with the little curtains. We had on our plastic green derby hats and some pins. I wore a green scarf with shamrocks on it (just like to one my daughter had on today) and Kenny wore this green silk tie I bought him in Manhattan. What a site! Anyway, great memories for a great place. Love to all and ENJOY YOUR DAY!

My Father Tom bought me a second hand Schwinn truck bike from that bike shop, that we stored in our basement. It was one of those heavy ass ones that could knock down a brick wall, the kind that was often used for delivery bikes. Me, Silky Sullivan, Bobby Annastasio, Joey and Gerard Pesce, all from 1576 Taylor used to drive around our block down Taylor, up Guerlain, up Theriot, across Tremont, and down Taylor again in a circle, the object was to not stop for any reason, and clock as many miles as possible on the odometer non-stop. A lot of times I'd take the lead because that Schwinn could take out a tank if it had to. Autumn days were the best because you could go all day and hardly break a sweat. Do you remember?

last week i ask for prayers for my cousins fiancee, who was struck by a car on his birthday and has been on life support ever since-justa yr ago, he was diagnosed with parkinson disease-the sad tale here is both my cousin diane and her fiancee peter were married once before and wre childhood sweethearts reunited again--they were both so, so happy--their lives became shattered last yaer with peter's diagnosis od parkinsons and just last friday, returning from the bakery, bringing home his own birtday cake, he was struck by a car as he was exiting his car--he is on a respirator but yesterday, the inevitable began, with the blood pressure dropping and his fevor rising--the end is probably very near-
this is such a sad story, i am crying typing this out--diane is such a sweet person--never had a great job, just worked in pathmark in the pharmacy dept as a cashier for 25 yrs so far and brought up one son, who is now a teacher-she lived a very simple life

why, oh why did this befall such asweey girl--it certainly challenges your faith and hope--i believe God has a plan for all of us but this situation, boggles my mind

keep praying for them--diane and peter--

My dad was friends with Eddie Sylvani and I even worked at the bike shop for a few weeks when he needed some extra help. He actually loved working with bikes and seeing the smiles it brought to kids faces when their parents bought them one. He was probably one of the nicest men you could ever meet.

He did in fact lose his eye to a piece of metal that shot up into it from some machine he was working on. To really understand what a nice guy Eddie was here's a story.

One day when I was about 9 or 10 I was riding my Stingray with friends(don't remember who) and we got "jumped" down by the Cross Bronx & Taylor Ave by 2 kids with knives and they stole my bike and I think one other one too. I was crushed. After all that bike was my freedom. About a week later my dad told me that Eddie wanted to see me and told me to stop in there after school. When I did, Eddie told me he had something for me for my birthday(which wasn't for 2 months...I doubt he even knew when it was)and gave me what I thought was an almost new bike. I couldn't believe it. Turns out it was an old bike he had in the shop but he completely overhauled it(at his own cost)and made it new and gave it to me.

Years later I asked my dad if he really paid for it but he swore that it was all Eddie and he even offered to pay but Eddie refused to take a penny. Eddie heard what happened and spent a week of his own time & money restoring that bike to give to me.

There should be more people in this world like Eddie Sylvani.

Stay warm........

Hello to all and to the PRETTY I had a bike not a new one but one that at least got me up and down the block.I remember riding it on WHITE PLAINS RD.and around the block.I did a lot of crashing into fences and other things.I crashed alot when I started out hahahah. But I did continue my bike adventures even when I moved to Beach Ave.Myself and Brian would ride our bikes together along the Bronx River to 233 St.on Saturdays. We had fun doing that together.I rode until I was in my late ---- started to feel a bit unsteady when some one tryed to actually run me off the road.Go ahead laugh!!!I did not get hurt thank God.But by the time I was up and trying to catch up with them they saw me and raced away.It was impossible to get their license plate.I rode a bike for a long time but after that incident I started to feel a bit unsteady.Well I know that was NOT your question but maybe mom was on to something. You know what they say about your intuition. She may have had one. CLAIRABELL MY PRETTY I was coming home and on Tremont Ave. just had my car repainted. It looked so nice and I was so proud. When I look up and coming at me is this guy out of control on his bike and crashes right into me.O my I could not believe this he crashed into me.I get out look at what now looks like a rainbow in the new paint job.The paint was still green.Well if that isen,t appropriate for this day.Well have a great St.Paddy,s Day and all the luck and Irish blessings to the whole lot of ya.And remember my PRETTY moms always know best luv ya!!!

Hey there Claire, interesting question. Good old Sylvani, very nice man. I believe he lost his vision in one eye from a piece of metal that broke off when he was repairing a bike. I think I can qualify for your question of who didn't have a bike. I mean I had a bike but I'm not sure I legitimately owned the bike. I was about 12 years old, 1962, and an unamed person in the neighborhood, had a bike and was selling it for only $10.00. I was in my glory, I could now cruise the neighborhood in minutes. A few days after having the bike I was up at the candy store by the Playdrome and I came out and a man approached me said give me my son's bike back. I looked at him in amazement and said it was my bike. He said no it's his son's bike and it was stolen from a Parckchester basement. I simply said that I didn't know anything about that and I had bought it from someone for $10.00, I got on the bike a drove away rather quickly realizing that I may have been riding someone else's bike, so maybe I had a bike but maybe I really didn't. Anyway years later, to confirm your mother's concern, I was working for Vic's Reliable butcher on Archer next to Pioneer. I was making a delivery and driving on Guerlain and about to make a right turn on Theiriot when a VW bug came around the corner making a left. There was literally no room between the car me and the curb and the heavy bike basket got smashed and I and the packages all went flying. It took me awhile to get up and I was quite sore for a few days. The bike was fine, it was probobly built better than the car. Anyway, a few months later the butcher shop was sued for the property damge the bike did to the car. Go figure. Nice question Claire, thanks. Happy St. Paddy's to ya all and have a good day and weekend. Love, Peace and Happiness, Matty Greenan

Claire,

Your mom was right. I once couldn't stop my bike and rode off the end of Taylor Ave into the street near the Cross Bronx. It was a close call with a car and one that taught me well. It took me days (or maybe weeks) to confess to my mother what had happened, as I'm sure I kinda pushed the envelope as to where I was allowed to ride.

The picture of that corner on Tremont Avenue brings lots of memories back, as I stood on that corner every school day waiting for the bus to take me to St. Raymond's Grammar School. I do wish I had gone to St Anthony's. You were lucky to have boys in your classes...it seems like it must have been a lot of fun and I think that some of their antics may have taken the heat off the girls...lol.

Happy St. Patrick's Day to all. Be safe.

Cheers,

In response to who had a bike growing up?, being the youngest of all the Kellys ( John Jim, Honey Kathleen, Harry, Maureen and last but not least me) we were always told we could not use the storage romm (our super/landlord was Mr. Jacow......who remembers Mr. Jacow? We did not have the storage room in our apt. Anyway, Happy St. Pat's Day to all. Hopefully we will be enjoying our big parade in Pearl River on Sunday.

My mother said we couldn't have one we might get hit by a car. So how many of you didn't have bikes? Have a great St.Patricks tomorrow I know I am. See ya

After my brother's funeral yesterday, the family went back to Tom's house to share some memories of Tom. I used my nephew's laptop to log into this website and read the family the many postings of condolences logged by the Stratton Park faithful. My sister-in-law Janice, my niece January, and my nephew Tom were all moved to tears to see my brother commemorated by so many of his contemporaries. It really was a touching, as well as a very fitting tribute to Tom. On behalf of the Acunzo family, thanks again for the many postings and e-mails I've gotten.

Hi Linda,

It's been a long time. I hope the years have been good to you. Just wanted to drop you a note to wish your brother, Kevin well from me when you speak with him . Seems like a lifetime ago he, Packy, Michael Butler, Tushie, Marc Seda & I hung out on the benches in front of 102.

If you speak with Jeannie Hessler please let her know I send her my best to her and TJ. She was one of the best softball players(not just girl softball player) in 102 park.

Take care,

Hi Linda,
This site has been the greatest thing I have seen in a long time not only have I contacted my old friends from Archer street. But I got my cousin Louie Corrado in touch with eddie and Doc (the Guys from the Cave). I spent some of the best years of my life on Archer Street delived for Pionneer so knew every family and their Apt. #'s from Whit PL.Rd to Nobel. My friend and former co-worker when I was teaching up where I live in Nyack Ny (Noreen Hart) Michael and Tommy Hart's sister told me about this and I am checking it every day and night. I just get lost in all the fond memories of hanging out on Archer.

My prayers and good thoughts to you, your family and to Tommy's wife and children.

My son graduated from NFA with January and that was the last time I saw Tommy. We did some catching up with stories of the old neighborhood. We graduated from St Anthony's together.

I'm sorry I won't be able to attend either the wake or the services as I'll be out of town for the next week or so.

Sacred Heart is actually in Newburgh on Route 9W.

Hi Matt:
The answer to your trivia question is the bottom of beach ave where it meets the cross-bronx expressway. Beach ave you was acually lower and they built it up with the construction of the expressway. When you stand on the sidewalk looking up at the tree you are probably above the half way mark of the tree.

Hello All: Hope all is well. I have a neighborhood question for ya. There is a place within Stratton Park where you can see a tree but you can't see the whole tree but only the upper portion of the tree. Any guesses where this tree is and why you cannot see the bottom of it? If you know the answer right off the bat hold off and let's see if we can get some interesting answers. Have a great weekend feasting on the positive and fasting from the negative. Oh yes, don't forget, no hamburgers and hot dogs today. Love, Peace and Happiness. Matt Keenan

My brother Tom just died after a long bout with diabetes, kidney failure and hypertension. He was a 60 years old, retired school teacher and retired New York Firefighter, survived by two children, his son Tommy, who's thirty-four, and daughter January, who's thirty-one, and his wife Janice, who's fifty-seven. They live near Newburgh, NY (actually New Windsor). He graduated St. Anthony's in 1960.

Tom was the good boy, the one who always tried to save me from myself. I'll miss him with all my heart.

if anyone is wondering why i'm on the web site so much is because i'm lonely--i retired to take some of the house chores away from my wife--she has to work 5 more yrs part time so we can keep health insurance--mary has many friends, almost all of them nurses like herself--it seems as i got older, any male friends i had moved to different parts of the country--it can get real lonely when you don't have someone other than your sister, son or wife to talk to--don't get me wrong, my wife made a great home for us and she is very devoted--i don't live in a hovel--my coop is beautiful and the people in the coop are wonderful to mary and i--when mary and i got sick with our separate operations, the whole building complex came to our aid offering help as well as our church-my lonliest time are the days she works--i'm very busy with chores but the lonliness creeps in, if i let it--this web site has helped me tremendously because i can at least converse with people who i knew and didn't know..but you all have been great and i deeply appreciate it--well time to check on my wash--"a woman's work is never done"--when mary comes home, the wash is done, the dinner is made, the house is vacuumed etc--

well life is ok--thanks be to God

to bugsy merendino, danny tufo, freddy celli, just to name a few

bugsy:--i saw a picture of you at one of the reunions-think it was the congers one--you still look in great shape-i was in awe of you when i was young because you had so much strength--you still look like you could play fullback or middle line backer on any team--you were some ballplayer--
danny-the one thing i remember about you is that you were loyal---you were always there in a pinch if anyone needed help--if i remember correctly, growing up was not so easy--i don't remember your dad but i think your mom was not too well--if i'm wrong, please forgive me--it appeared you were always on your own making your own way--i was always impressed with that
freddy--as i didscussed before--you and your dad discussed baseball like it was a religion--you were a great player--i really surprised you never went pro--from what i remember, you were good enough--you had great power to all fields--hope your happy in florida--my sister just moved to the villages outside of orlando-her and her hubby love it

i know i could mention more names but these are just 3 who had an affect on me when i was very young--

the one common denominator about all of them was that all 3 were good people--regardless of their other talents, that was the most important

hope everyone has a great day

I HAVE TO MENTION A SPECIAL GUEST, RALPH'S AUNT COOKIE, WHO IS STILL LIKE AN AUNT TO ALL OF US AND WE LOVE HER FOR IT. IT HAS BEEN OVER 30 YEARS SINCE WE WERE ALL TOGETHER. LOTS OF OLD STORIES AND LAUGHS. WHAT WAS ALSO VERY NICE WAS GETTING TO KNOW TODD'S WIFE DINA,RALPH'S WIFE JULIE AND AUNT COOKIE'S HUSBAND BOB. WE DID MISS SOME OUR OLD FRIENDS, THE BUTLER'S AND THE LUCIANO'S, ESPECIALLY. BUT SILL IT WAS LIKE YESTERDAY, WE ALL FIT BACK INTO OUR CHILDHOOD PERSONALITIES. TEASING AND LAUGHING WITH ONE ANOTHER.I SHARE THIS WITH ALL OF YOU FOR A REASON. DON'T PUT OFF THAT PHONE CALL, YOU HAVE BEEN MEANING TO MAKE. hi
since i live in yonkers , i am only 10 miles from the bronx--the other day i road to beach ave and leaned against my old building 1426--i closed my eyes and went back 50 yrs when i was 8 yrs old--i lived on the 3rd floor-i could hear stevie the bungalo bar man, coming down the street--i could hear my mom, call me up for dinner and to do my homework--in those days, the nuns made the parents sign your homework pad, so you couldn't put anything past them at all--
my mom let me watch my favorite show at 6pm before i started my homework, which was superman--then homework began and my was tougher than any drill sargeant i had in the service--but it paid off because my grades were good in school and i have mom to thank--half of it was hard work and the other half was fear.
with my eyes closed i could hear mike tramo, dennis russo , danny nigro, calling me telling me to go to ps 102--there was a big soft ball game and we were challenged-this was always fun-even if i just got down with a tough practicewith the archerrams, i was always ready to play ball--
i opened my eyes and the sad reality of what was faded away --there will never be days like that again--we had a grand childhood living in the city and i wouldn't trade it for anything

i feel like i have been monopolizing this web site but my heart has been shattered in many pieces this yr with my wife's prognosis re her breast cancer--this web has made me forget some of the heartache for awhile--i hope no one is angry at me for all the web e mails but it has been good therapy for me

God bless you all for the kindness many of you have shown me especially the people who don't even know me--that's when it's really special

Hello and happy Friday. One cafe down at the SOUTH SIDE SEA PORT had the pleasure of talking to a couple who had been married for a very long time and were both very nice folks. As it turns out during our conversation they mentioned comming from da bronx. At that point from WHERE?I don,t think it will take you long to figure that one out Stratton park.Yes,I was so surprised in this small but lovely place we were drawn to each other like moths to a flame. Is that wild. The man in his late sixties or maybe older and wife a bit younger lived on Leland Ave went to St.Anthony,s and also both attended St.Helenas H.S.They had some very interesting stories to tell us.It was simply amazing to me in this remote little cafe, now don,t laugh that was called cafe do do like the bird and as in do,re,me,fa,so,la,ti,do. Anyway what I really wanted to say as we approach EASTER and what we are really all about beside family and friends. Is that the HEART OF STRATTON PARK WILL NEVER DIE AND LIVE ON FOREVER!!! This is so evident to me now more than ever not just for that incident. But in each and every example I read on this board. With the passing of Ash Wednesday and the desending forty days till the Assention.I think instead of giving something up which I always have a hard time doing anyway maybe I will research the avenue of giving in and thank God for all the blessings in my life each and every day.Well hipity hop and a basket full of love.May be early but never to soon to wish each of you a HAPPY DAY!!!Opps I wanted to mention To JOE MAC I watched the cd you made of Congers what a great job and nice of you to give that.Like I said you are the one who makes the moments unforgetable and gives of himself in a most thoughful way. Thanks so much for my cd.Again LOL Linda

i can see from your messages how much you are hurting. please stay strong and keep writing. you talk about how a caregivers role is to listen, i'd like to think we are all your caregivers and we are here to listen to you. what you say is so right, i work in a doctor's office and so many of my patients just need someone to listen to them. i know you don't know me but please know that you and your family are in my prayers!

Well said, Joe. They always say the best way to have a friend is to be a friend, and, yes, sometimes that entails "zipping your lip" and just listening to the other person. Not an easy thing to do, but something worth remembering. So especially during this season of lent, I will try a little harder to lend an ear to those who need it.

folks
with us babyboomers coming of age now, we are becoming caregivers----and believe me its not easy--i need to tell my story and how i misunderstood what a caregiver is suppose to do-
i have been a caregiver 3 times in my life
1)when i went through my divorce in 1980 and needed to be a caregiver to my son
2)when i was a caregiver to my mom when she went in a nursing home in 1996
3)at the present time, with my wifewho has breast cancer

the common denominator in all 3 instances was listening instead of talking--talking, many times, adds to the problem, because when traumas hit, there isn't anything at that moment worth saying that will help the immediate situation

all this hit me last night when my wife was in excruciating pain which has stemmed from her cancer treatment which ended almost a yr ago--she still has residual pain--
all i can do is place my arm around her, pray quietly and listen to what she has to say--it helps agreat deal for people in pain to talk and know there is someone there who will be present but quiet

my 7 yr old son had to tell me how he missed me--
my mom told me how terrible it was to go from the hospital to the home never to see her coop again
my wife had to tell me how it felt to experience the pain she had daily

the one thing i also found out is that these people regardless of age have to go through this barrier of venting their feelings not around it

a caregiver's job is a helpless one, because we want to do some definitive action to help but all we can do and should do is just be present in the moment and listen

so the moral of the story is, threow the degrees out the window for the moment, shut the mouth of and proverbial useless wisdom you think may help and just
'l i s t e n"--you will conquer more battles if you do this, believe me--

remember mother teresa said, doing big things are not soi important as doing small things with love and always with God's assistance-
please, my friends, listen to the hurt in the people that you loive instaed of talking and depriving them of explaining their feelings--i have learn this the hard way

i hope this may help someone who may be experiencing these problems right now

peace and love in the Name of Jesus christ
love and peace today

Folks,

I don't know about you but it seemed like my mom had her watch dogs out the windows to follow my every step-remember i mentioned i never did the bar scene--this really wasn't because i was an angel, but my wings would have been clipped off by my dad if i ever got caught. i don't know how my mom did it, but she had her friends hanging out the windows like "bats", looking at my every move--even if i hid in the alley ways under the buildings on beach and taylor, one of her friends would call her and tell her where i was. one day i was holding the hand of some girl on upper beach by doc adler and my mom found out--she said "so in so told her and i should be very careful because it makes an inappropriate appearance to be doing that--i could just imagine if i got caught kissing this girl, she would have her friends swoop down upon me like 'delta force', and drag me to my mom for a mass beating--when i was in parchester by lerners i use to dodge in between cars to avoid her friend rita baldasarri--this woman spent her life hanging out the window, i'm surprised she didn't perm her hair with "bird-shit"--

you could always tell my mom's friends...they were the ones with the 10 inch necks--my mom's church group were called the pacesetters--they use to go to all the church functions---i renamed them, "delta force in sup-hose"--
you could "fart in ps 102 and one of my mom's friends would hear it on beach ave and call mom'=
does any of this sound familiar who had strict parents--maybe, i'm hitting a chord with someone-being under constant surveillance was a real drag--it sounds funny now but at the time, i wanted a "hit" made on all my mom's friends like in the godfather when mike corleone knocked off all the heads of the 5 families-=-i definitely would have loved to arrnge something like that when i was a kid--

well this was only one incident i remember-if i can take you down memory lane again, you'll hear from me

peace and love

To all my friends on the web--

thankyou you all for your encouragement to stay on the web-site--i will continue to do so--i guess when you get older , at least i do sometimes, you happen to second guess yourself about the actions in your speech and writing-you question if what you are doing is correct--when your young, it seems, you shoot from the hip with no cares in the world--with age comes wisdom but it also brings along, sometimes an air of insecurity-thanks to the many webs i received since my last e mail, plus a personal call from linda hall to keep on trucking, i will continue to write and hopefull, my trials may in some way help others-
lent is a time for reflection and helping others even if you don't know them--it even says in the bible, what satisfaction is it if you help a close friend or family member who you know will thank you-its more christian to try and reach out to a stranger who needs help --remember , we are all children of god and we must, see christ in the face of everyone regardless of how we feel--

talking the talk is just that--"?t a l k"-walking the walk is what counts

i wish everyone a safe and happy day--i love you all-

my stratton pk/parkchester pals

folks
i just received a phone call from linda hall, who told me to please stay on the web site--the site can be used for any feelings that need to be expressed because one never knows when what you say may open the eyes of someone else--we will find in life that problems are not always so unique--we all seem to have experienced some of the same problems but the trick is having the courage to place them in writing, where it may assist someone you may least expect to read it--

linda proved to me by her phone call to be the nicest person i have had the pleasure to talk to in years--she's honest, compassionate, loving, sincere and funny all rolled up into one--i simply love this lady and please don't think i'm being to forward but she is such a joy to speak with--her compassion and honest are the common-denominator of her entire personality-

it was a complete joy to speak with linda--she is a gift
wrapped up in a package of love to be shared with anyone who needs her help--a very rare quality--

thanks my love for the phone call, and i will continue to be on the site--sweet dreams

love, your buddy, joe b

I am terribly sorry for the run of tragic events you have experienced in the last year. You and your wife are in my prayers. Joe, I am not equipped in any way to counsel you in matters such as these, but have you thought of talking to a parish priest, or someone else you trust who can guide you through these rough times.

Sometimes a fresh perspective can help, and I pray that today, you and your wife will be uplifted.

good morning my friends,
this site is meant for memories of the good old times in the stratton park-parkchester area when we were very young--

times were carefree and happy then and life was grand--
as one gets older, a strange but realistic phenomenon occurs--its called change and the passing of the torch to a new generation, and with that come some sad events-
mary, my wife and i , besides being hit with our own illnesses and the loss of her mom have also been hit with an innumerable amount of losses every day for the past year , that can only seem eerir to say the least-we know that bad news hits all of us atr a certain age, but mary and i have been spooked by the barrage of bad news items that have literally come our way every day in the past 1 and 1/2--
1)we lost her mom
2)mrs clark passed away and she lived on our floor
3)marys good friend came down with a very serious case of pancreatic cancer
4)our neighbors to the left of our apt lost a sister and the other two wnt into a nursing facility
5) i found out through this web site thatr my good friend mike tramo died 2 yrs ago
6)fr mike from st anthonys passed 1 and 1/2 yrs ago
7)my neighbor down the hallway, who i spoke to the night before died while on the dialysis machine the following day-it was his weding anniversary
8)marys good friend and doctor at einstein hospital(a cardiac surgeon) dropped dead of a massive heart attach at 51 yrs old-no heart history previously
9) a lady who took care of us at our favorite diner just died from lung cancer 6 weeks after she aws diagnosed--62 yrs old
10) yesterday, our good friend on the 5th fl was rushed to the hospital with apparent pains in his stomach-test are being run and he has stomach cancer in his family

i can go on and on--mary and i are at our wits end because even though we are very spitual and go to church regularly, and pray together, there has been no lull in the bad news -we find out something daily that has now worn us down--

we realize life comes to an end for all of us but these items i mentioned occured in a 10 month period and they for no apparent reason are still coming--

can anyone relate???/?

i'm sorry for this web e news macabe report but i feel snakebit and to go along with marys grim diagnosis of her breat cancer, its unbearable to have so much bad news hit us in such a short period of time--we are both screaming to God in a non basphemous way, "enough already"-please have mercy on us

scolling through all my old classmate pictures and remembering everyone, omg, what a trip. makes me wonder where are they all now? i wish them all the best and years of happiness yet to come. i can't believe i thought i would never get out of that school and here i sit, 38 years later, memories flooding back. most won't remember me, but i'm sure they would remember my brother sean flanagan.

Cathie,

I was happy to speak to you on the phone. As I told you, your brother Joey was one of my best friends in grammar school and we remained in touch until the early nineties. Every time I remember Joe it brings a smile to my face. He was one of the best movie/TV trivia buffs I knew, and believe me, I knew some good ones and was no slouch myself. He could pick out some obscure character actor from the forties and give you his film bibliography. He and I spent many a Saturday afternoon at the Palace Theatre, the Circle Theatre or the Loews American checking out the latest double feature of spagetti westerns, or early Bond flicks. He and I walked all the way to Freedomland after it shut down, scaled the fence and got caught exploring the abandoned fun houses in the early sixties. It was the first time I ever got a gun pulled on me. I did many, many firsts with your brother, as we ratted the streets, alleys and rooftops of Stratton Park, and I'll remember him always. We went to more Catholic school dances together than I could possibly count, and split more quarts of Reingold and Shaeffer beer than could be contained in the Archer Street deli. Here's one to you, Joe...

Hello All: Hope all is well. Two things: First, I have two tickets for the play "Doubt" performed at the Shubert theater in New Haven Connecticut for Saturday April 7, 2007 (that would be Holy Saturday). They are good seats in second row center of the balcony which would be about the 12 row in the orchestra. I have a schedule conflict and can't make it but will see it in Philadelphia in May. I understand that the play is touring the east coast and Tony winner for best actreess Cherry Jones will be performing. Anyone interested please contact me via my email address. Hope somebody can make it, it's a great show.
Second: I'd like to thank Joe Mac for his picture taking at our recent gatherings. He does a great job. I had the opportunity to see the CD slide show with music of the Conyers lake picnic from last summer and really enjoyed the candid shots and music. I wonder why it's not on the site yet. Take care, and enjoy the heat wave and wave bye-bye to old man winter. Love, Peace and Happiness. Matt Keenan

Thanks, Linda, but I must humbly defer all credit to this website to Mike. He does all the work - I just post my exalted opinion from time to time! Don't feel bad about getting older. I don't know about you, but I would not want to be 17 again for anything. I am comfortable with who I am and what I am right now - remember how it was as a teenager and young adult? Always wanting to be thinner, prettier, better dressed, more popular - the list goes on and on. (OK I guess a small part of me still wants that). But I think us baby boomers have evolved into a pretty special group, as is evidenced by all the wonderful people on this board.

Hi All it is Chatty Patty again - and as my sister Theresa has put I am from the older crowd LOL I never get mad at her I just get even - Great to hear from Laura and Tom Anderson again sorry we missed you guys sure hope we can make the picnic but as I've said before grandchild #4 is on the way so we will see - I really really really enjoyed seeing everyone soooo much and I do agree with others that Archer Street is the exception to the rule of "You can't go home again". It is truly amazing how you can not see people for 40 years and then see them and talk to them like no time at all has passed. Also I must say that even the new people you meet when Stratton Park gets together seems like you have ties to them also. Just such a great group of people REAL PEOPLE you don't realize how much you miss them till you see them again and a little bell goes off in your head that makes you realize what has been missing in most of the people you have met is Archer Steet.... Love you All and hope to see you again real soon it certainly was worth the trip

TOMMY KIRSCHNER - HELLO How are you??? Please drop me a line and let me know "What's Up With You"???? I know Theresa would love to hear from you too. Any one heard from the Jeffs (Eddie and Tommy) or know where they are and let me Not forget Johnny McCormick and Eddie Mcelroy?? Best As Always Patsy

Hello to All

Harry Kelly from what I've been reading you are the MAN. Congrats on another job well done.

Laura and I are really bummed(well me more than her)that we missed the event of the year. We just got back from Vegas in the wee hours(the kids sent us for our 40th) and my driving skills at 1 PM were pretty close to what they would have been at 10 PM and I hadn't even had a drink yet. This great grandfather gig is really making me feel older than I should.

Linda Hall and Sue Sica I was looking forward to seeing you again. Yes you too Claire. Richie, Charles, John and the rest of my VFW stalwarts, too much time between parties.

To Pat and Fred, Laura and I were looking forward to seeing you both again after such a long time. Maybe at the July soiree.

To all my other friends known and unknown, mentioned and unintentionally overlooked, stay safe, be healthy and keep on rockin'.

I just want to give a special thanks to the people who put this web-site together. Going back home and going to the Mudd reunion was a such a fun time for me. Seeing the people I hung out with made me feel that growing up in 102 Park was a actually a great time. I am looking forward to the next reunion and hoping to see more people. When they say "that you can go back home again" it is a great feeling knowing where I grew up.

Harry Kelly, another great job on the MudBowl...certainly one of the better ones I've been to...but I say that every year...

Congrats to Bugsy on breaking the record for most MudBowls attended...has missed nary a one since 1962...WOW!!!

Cathy Merindino, I agree whole-heartedly with you about the "chop breaking"...certain people go over board with it, I'll speak to Owen Purcell and see if he'll lighten with the "chop bustin" just a bit for the next get- together... <;~)

Theresa Graham(Jacobs), I knew Kenny would catch on sooner or later...I just didn't think it would end so soon...<:~)

Jimmy Carolan, in reference to your question "where was our buddy Kevin"...I heard there was a severe outbreak of double parking in Pearl River this past Saturday, and to the surprise of no one, duty came first for our "man in blue"...<:~)

Matty and Linda thanks for the party favors they added a nice touch...

Freddy and Pat "Pizza" it was really great seeing you guys after all these years ...next time bring "Uncle" Neal...<:~)

And finally Eddie Acunzo, regarding your question about the whereabouts of Jeannie Murphy, I am the wrong person to ask...remember where I thought you were...<;~)

It was so nice to see so many faces I haven't seen in years at the Mudbowl. What a great turnout from St. Anthony's class of '65: Mary Lamasney, Maureen Savage, John Tell (Kenny says to tell you we finally have to call it quits), Jimmy Carolan, Silky Sullivan, Jack Cusack(you do still look the same). You all look fabulous. My apologies to those I didn't recognize right away - it's not that you've changed - just my eyes and probably a touch of early Alzheimer's. It was also great to see so many from the OLDER CROWD (kidding), my sister and brother-in-law Pat and Freddy Abbamonte, Cathy and Bugsy, Denise, Patty Lamasney, and from when I was really young on Beach Avenue Betty Kelly and Claire Scanlon. They say you can't go home again but it was really nice to revisit good people from the past. Theresa and Kenny Graham

Does anyone remember Jeannie Murphy? I went to PS 102 kindergarten with her, must have been 1957 I think, and at least the first few grades of grammar school at St. Anthony's. Platinum blond hair, blue eyes, wild spirit, my first girlfriend. Mary White, John Tell, what ever happened to Jeannie, do you know?

Happy Valentine's Day to all my Archer Street friends, and a belated Happy Birthday to Marie-Elena.

The Mud Bowl was fantastic, as usual. Harry, thanks for all the effort you put into it every year...you did another outstanding job. I loved the place and the great music in that jukebox. It was so much fun. This site seems to have really helped in bringing even more of us together. It had been a long, long time since I has seen people like Jerry Brennan, Maryann Reuther, and Angela Connelly. For the people who came from places like Pennsylvania and Virginia...I hope the trip was worthwhile. I think it was, and it was so wonderful to see you. I had so many laughs...you Archer Streeters are so funny, even when you are busting chops (and you KNOW who you are, lol). I loved every minute of it. Matty and Linda...thanks so much for the gifts.

Basically, the whole time I just felt like I was having a good time with brothers and sisters, and as Dorothy said..."There's no place like home."

Thanks to all for a wonderful time. You are the best. Cheers!

I reealy think this web site is great. Growing up on Taylor I heard many stories of how things used to be but I always wondered. Now I can see!
It's wierd because there is a picture of boys in 102 park and in the background I can see the windows to where I grew up :)Also there is a picture of a young boy named Hoyt sitting on the stairs with a friend at 1531 Taylor , I knew a man named Hoyt that lived in 1531 with his family, I think it's the same person.
Thanks for this site.

Another successful "Mud Bowl", more great stories. Kudos' to Harry Kelly and Doc Doherty for putting it all together. Great to see all the "regulars" as well as quite a few newcomers. It sounds like the July picnic will also be well attended. It really is amazing when you think of the camaraderie that this little spot in the Bronx has generated over the years. Buggsy Merendino said he has been at every "Mud Bowl" since 1962. John Tell decided that must make Bugs the all time attendance record holder. Thanks to everyone who made it and some thoughts on a couple who did not. Ed "Dingo" Nocella was missed, Cathy Merendino advised he had recently suffered a heart attack. Get well soon Ed our prayers are with you. Kevin Bourke, where the hell were you. It wasn't quite the same without you.

Hello All: Just wanted to express my gratititude to Harry Kelly and his behind the scenes supporters for organizing and pulling off another great Mud Bowl Day. It was a real Super Bowl. Enjoyed the evening tremendously, chatted, ate well, did some modest elbow bending and got in a few dances. Great crowd turnout and a lot of fun to see old and new friends like Tom Heckler and his wife Mary, Pat and Mary Lamasney, Ken Graham - who I hadn't seen since 1964, Betty Kelly, Claire Scanlon, Cathy Merendino, Pat Doherty,Owen Purcell, John Tell, Jim Carolyn, Joe Mac, Marie Elena, Marge Durkins Williams and her hubby, Silky Sullivan, Bob Hillman, Donald Diehl, Tommy Savage, Maureen Savage, Sue Sica, Don Metchner and if I didn't mention all the names, please forgive me, you are not forgotten. My apologies for any name mispellings. Someday, bit by bit, I'll get to meet everyone. Also, and most importantly I have to give special mention to Vinny Imbrosio who was there in spirit via cell phone. I know Vinny enjoyed chatting with a lot of folks and even spoke to some gals in the ladies room. He sends his love to all. Several months ago I put out on this site an SOS to help me get in touch with Vinny, my first childhood, chum from Stratton Park. It took awhile but Linda Hall was able to track him down through his brother in-law Tony Barbado and I was able to reconnect with Vinny and I am eternally grateful to Linda for having this special guy back in my life. We plan on continuing the reconnection and developing new experiences for the present and future thus creating new memories. You see, reconnecting with cherished folks doesn't mean that we are living in the past but using the past as a platform to blast off to new and exciting times. So, thank you Linda for manifesting my dream and helping make my desire to get in touch with Vinny become a reality. Our old neighborhood charm and graciousness lives on. A lot of folks asked me about the skate keys. I wished I had brought more. For those who would like to get some, it is pretty easy. Don't laugh but this is how to get them. On your computer enter stupid.com, scroll down and on the right side look for Stupid Gifts then click on Vintage Stupidity, the next screen will have the Skate Key necklace, and you can then arrange to purchase them on-line. It's a unique gift and a treasure I wil buy more of. Oh, yes, I have no business affiliation with Stupid.com. Looking forward to the outdoor picnic in July. Have a great week and all be well. Love, Peace and Happiness. Matt Keenan

My husband and I had a wonderful time at the Mud Bowl yesterday. It was certainly worth the trip, both trips. The one from PA and the trip down memory lane. Marianne Murray, it was such a special treat seeing you. You are actually a very precious part of my life. Your parents, Joan and Jimmy were wonderful people. Lots of fond memories there. Linda, it was so sweet of you to give me your skate key. This is such a treasure. Thank you Matty for the reissuing of these keys, what a great idea. I can't even image where you got them. Please be sure Linda gets another one. It was great seeing all of you. Everyone was having such a good time, it seemed like no one wanted it to end. We are looking forward to the picnic. Don tells me it will be the Sunday after July 4th, which I believe will be July 8th. Don, did I get that right? I'm sure you'll let us all know long before the time comes. It would be great to see even more "old time new comers" at these reunions. Take care all and, once again, "Thanks for the Memories"

Till we meet again...

I have vivid memories of the Bornx even though I left at a young age. My grandparents lived on Merrill street for years. I attended St.Anthonys school for 1st and 2nd grade befor emy family moved to Mahopac Ny. I remember my first grade teacher Ms. Fair and Monsignor Ford. I remember the neighborhood well. In fact I remember a big english sheep dog lived on Commonwealth ave I guess as a kid it stuck in my head. I remember the Flatterys?? Mr Skelton? Mrs Ryan... but I never forgot a good friend I had that I have been trying to locate! I saw that there were many of you from taylor and beach ave and I believe my friend lived on Beach ave. Her name was Lisa Schneider and of memory serves me correctly she had a brother Frank and a sister Susan. Does anyone recall this family or know where they may be?

Hi Matty,

It's always difficult to put one of these things together and determine what to charge. The organizer has to order enough food for what they think will show up. Should they order for 5, 50 or 200? I've been to these where there has been less than 100 and some with as many as 250. Too little food and people will be pissed, too much and you're holding the bill for people who decided not to show up. Will everybody still show up if it snows? The cost of the food is still there and someone has to pay the bill.
I don't think anyone is going to go broke over $35.
I'm sure if everyone wanted to send their money in advance it may create a lower price, but that is not always a reasonable expectation either. In any case, it's a fair price for a great day with old friends.
Hope to see many of our friends next week.

Happy Super Bowl Monday,

Don

Hello Everyone, Hope all is well: I hope I'm not opening up a can of worms here. I don't mean to cause a ruffle. I personally have no problem with the $35 open bar charge at the mud bowl and assure you I will do my share of elbow bending. However, suppose someone doesn't drink or just may have a soda or juice or two. It doesn't seem fair. Suppose someone comes late, like 5:30 or 6. There must be away to charge a lesser amount for those folks. It would be a shame if the cost would discourage someone from attending, especially those making a long trek. I'm sure some reasonable and acceptable accomodation can be created. Anyone else have feelings on this. So, if anyone knows who is the head coach of the Mud Bowl, please pass the question on or e-mail me directly or post a response on the site. By the way will there be a band like other years. Thanks, All be well, hope to see many folks next week. Love, Peace and Happiness. Matt

TINKY!!!

Happy to see that you will be coming to the Mud Bowl. I'm looking forward to a good time, as usual. I think you will find it worth the trip. With the Abbamontes coming from Virginia and Denise Tavares also coming from Pa., Claire Scanlon (and possibly Thurston Delaney) coming from the New London CT area, things are looking good. BTW, at our picnic, several people noted that you look a lot like Claire, so you will see your "twin" on the 10th.

I'm glad that John Tell was able to give you directions...my understanding is that the party starts at 3 o'clock and goes to 7. What that usually means is that an entry charge covers food and drink for those hours. Afterwards, we are back to paying for drinks. If anyone else has different or additional information, please post it on this website, because people has been asking about more details, including costs.

Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Cheers,
Cathy

John, thanks for the directions. Is there a certain time to show up?

I was thinking about something from the old days.
(OH OH! :) Do we all remember the term "Pen Pal"? Thing of the past since we don't use pens too much anymore. Well, I was thinking that due to technology this is like having a Pen Pal group or listserve. At the Mud Bowl I will definitely raise a glass to miracles of technology...hell...I'm sure I will find a few more things to raise a glass to before the night is through ;)

I'm hoping that this website will go through. Not sure if sending links to other sites is restricted. I think it will be enjoyed by many. In fact, we will probably be hearing some of this stuff at the Mud Bowl. It's a music site that plays songs from 1950 thru 1982. (Free) Something for everyone. I like most of the stuff from 56 thru 64. Once you get it playing you can shrink it down and leave it play while your at your computer. Great background. I know it makes paying the bills more pleasant :) You may have to copy and paste into your browser. I hope it works.

Enjoy all and, as always...

Hi To All,

I haven't been here for awhile but I haven't forgotten. I am so looking forward to "The Mud Bowl". I'm glad I checked in because I thought it was the Sunday after "Superbowl" (the 11th) but I see that it will held Saturday the 10th. I'm wondering what time and I'm also not real sure about where it is. What's the best way to get there coming from GW Bridge? I haven't been in the area for sometime.

Cathy Merendino, I'm looking forward to seeing you again, my newest friend from Stratton Park, and also seeing lots of "old" (no offence ;) friends from the Bronx. Mary, I'm glad you will make it. It seems that Eileen Cutaia can't get there but who knows, maybe she'll surprise us. Betty, it will be great to see you there, perhaps some of your sisters can make it, that would be so wonderful. The only thing that might keep me from getting there is bad weather. I'm coming from PA. (I can't believe I'm such a Hick :)...and Matty, I haven't forgotten the Bud for a Bud. It's for a trivia question so long ago, which is now a trivia question in itself...hee hee.

Well, any more info, directions, would be appreciated by this slick from the sticks. Thanks in advance and can't wait to see all. Till then...

It's been a while since I've signed on. Happy New Year to all.Patsy, good to hear from you and Fred, I hope you make it up I'd like to see you guys again. Of course I remember playing in the alleys with the gang, you lived across the alley in 1444. I do remember a pogo stick making an appearance from time to time but I don't know where it came from. I saw Theresa and Kenny a few months back at a wedding, boy did we have some catching up.
As to meat pies, I remember them being made on Tuesdays, I would buy a little paper tray that held five or six and a container of german potato salad. The best was Sunday, I would stop in the deli after church and get those Boar's Head breakfast sausage, they were delicious, and blood pudding for mom and dad.
There was a German deli near me in Briacliff Manor that had the meat patties, I would try to get over there when they were available. It seems that they were as popular in Briarcliff as they were on Archer St. I often came up empty.
Somebody was asking a while back about stores that had moved.
I was driving north on route 45 in Rockland County one day, between Spring Valley and Pomona on the right hand side I saw a bakery, LIOTTA BROS., I stopped in and talked to the owner, a grandson of one of the founding brothers. I told him I remembered the bakery from the Bronx, he asked "Bronxdale?" I said no Beach Ave., he was blown away, the store is there if you want to stop by.

Hi All my old friends: Especially Don Diehl and Brenda Behringer and Karen Tanner - Been trying to get back in touch with you all but as I am new to this computer stuff and have written and sent this response 5 times now and not getting put into the message board I am assuming it doesn't like me or I am doing something consistently wrong. Anyway if this works here goes. Don how are you, so good to hear from you. It's been quite sometime since Metropolitan Days and Archer Street. Stay in touch and let me know a little more about you. Where you live, work, how many children, etc. Hope we will see you at the mudbowl Fred and I are going to try and drive up (weather permitting). My sister Theresa and Kenny Graham may be coming too. Talk to you soon and hope to see you soon. Hi too to Brenda, how are you. Let me know where you are at - We live in Virginia - for the last 17 years now. Please say Hi to Celeste for me too. Hope you guys can make it to the mudbowl. I am going to be a grandma again in July, so I doubt we will be making the picnic but will be trying to for that also. I don't recall the incident you are talking about but do believe it happened - We Archer Street girls always kind of "Did things our way" LOL Matty - I read your trivia question and wanted to ask if the street could be the little down the end of beach and across the street where the old lot used to be. Don't know the name of the street but Danny Nigro used to live there and there weren't a whole lot of house on that street. I would like to ask if any one else remembers the 2 lots on beach ave where we went sleigh riding and built forts and had snowball fights boys against the girls?? In the summer we went across to the other lot and that was so over grown we played hide and seek there and REMEMBER Hot Beans and butter and red rover and all the fun we had. We also played I Declare War and Acey-deucy and curb ball and stick ball and who remembers pogo sticks. Owen Purcell this is a memory you might recall - we were real young playing in the airyways football with the Galvins, Hecklers and Thornbys. We also played hide and seek there. Remember Herbie Ulrich, Tommy Roller... Who remembers a pogo stick?? Slinkies, Hoola Hoops - Double Dutch Jump rope. Well I will try sending this again - Love to all - Pat

Thanks to all who chipped in on the question of the street with the fewest residence add-resses in Stratton Park. John Tell, someone told me in advance that you would get this one, and not only did you guess the right street, Noble Ave, you had the address, 1500, as well. Kind of amazing, when it is probably one address with the most residents of any other building. Yes, it was kind of a shame to lose our big lot with high growing reeds and cave to 1500 Noble. Donald you almost pulled one off with Cross Bronx Expressway, but guess what? The Cross Bronx Expressway has three homes with an address. I used to think that Noble Avenue swung around Mansion up to Rosedale and Tremont. But guess what that small strip is another street called Bronx River Avenue. So, we should add Cross Bronx Expressway and Bronx River Avenue to the list of Streets in Stratton Park. Just an added note, Wood Ave. has two residences but there are about three more to be added when construction is completed at the corner of Leland and Wood. Thanks, again, that was some fun. Have a great week and hope to see some old friends and meet some new ones at our next "Mud Bowl" in two weeks. Be well, Love, Peace and Happiness, Matt Keenan

Matty...A good question that has me stumped...I too first thought of all the streets previously given...<:~(

So I am now thinking it may be a "trick" question you have hoisted upon us...I'm gonna go with Noble Avenue as "my final answer"...

I think the stretch Noble Avenue that lies within the confines of Stratton Park has only one addy...

The infamous 1500 Noble which took away our precious lot that was the home to many a fort in my younger years and later on to many a beer party along with the occasional "mickey" roast...<:~)

Hello All: Let me see, we have three different answers and obviously a lot of thought. Bobby, Guerlain is a good answer, in fact I thought it would have been in the top 3. It once had only about 5 but it now has 10 with the apartments built over Carvel. Pat that was pretty good with Wood, but I'm afraid it has just one to many to be a winner. Marge, it would seem that Guion, the shortest block, would have the least number but it has more than Wood which has already been excluded. Now, Lydia and Marie Elena, you both came up with something very interesting with Archer Street. However, each of those buildings between Beach and Taylor have 2 address numbers per building giving us four. Also, On Archer between White Plains and Leland there are two buildings and there are apartments with an address on the second floor above the stores between Leland and Thieriot. So, I'm sorry guys, you are doing an admirable job and are comming very close but there is only one answer for this one street. Keep trrying, here's a hint you can exclude St. Lawrence, I very generous ain't I. Have a good day, If anyone wants a hint, I'm sure I can come up with another one more endearing. Hi Matt:
I thought of two streets that I think would be the answer to the trivia question. They are either Guerlain St or Guion Place. Pretty sure it is Guerlain St but Guion Place was also very small.

Let's see how many different answers there are? Which Street in Stratton Park has the fewest resident street add-resses? (Sorry for the dash, the real word was spammed, imagine that. So in your answer don't spell add-ress correctly. If you don't know take a wild guess. Be well, Love Peace and Happiness. Matt Keenan

Thanks to Marie Elena for letting my Mom know about this site. It's great to see so the names of so many people I remember and love. I grew up in Stratton Park and with the people there from grade school through the teen years and those friends and the experiences we shared have stayed with me. Those times are frequently the topic of "remember when" or "when I was younger" stories that often end in tears of laughter or sometimes just tears - but always with a feeling of warmth.

Stella - Thanks for the cheerleading picture! Hard to believe I was ever that young; although, not hard to believe that I am still that short!

Hi Lydia,

yes, it is the same guy, who resembles "steve allen". he looks the same. he has the same glasses and bowling alley shirts. don't know who is doing the pressing for him these days. i remember the other man you mentioned. i don't think he can still be alive! just heard from another "strattonpark" friend ,informed me that the florist on buhre ave., also in the bronx. it's the florist from metropolitan oval. anybody else come across any of the old neighborhood shopkeepers? i still remember going to doc adler's pharmacy, as kids (4 or 5)we use to play in the phone booth. a childhood friend, gracie lane, pushed me while i was sitting on 1 of the old scales in doc adler's store. we all remember the kind that had the mirror, waist length down. so you could see your legs & hold on to the sides. i believe it cost a nickel then. i was sitting on the scale. gracie wanted to look in the mirror behind me. i didn't move fast enough. she pushed me into the mirrored scale. which broke. i don't remember crying. i just remember my mom as she held my hand while doc adler took the glass splinters out of my back and hair. it was the only time i was ever behind the counter and in the backroom of doc adler's store. i still get an itchy feeling on my back, when i think about that day. stay safe dear friends.

Wow Marie,
The Leland Cleaners is still in operation? I remember the original location well. I believe the owner's name was Stanley. I always thought he looked like Steve Allen. I bought one of my favorite outfits from him for $5. It was a pant suit that someone brought to be cleaned & never picked up. A few doors down there used to be a man named Jimmy who did all the pressing for the cleaners, he reminded me of Louie Armstrong. He was in this tiny room & it was hot, hot hot!!! He used to have a small fridge in that room with bottles of ice cold water he would share with the neighborhood kids. I remember he used to have "naked lady" pictures hanging on his walls. I went in there once with some of my friends when I was about 9 years old & I remember thinking, this isn't a good place to be. Never went back again.I might have been completely wrong. He seemed like a very nice man, but my inner voice told me to stick with going to Pioneer's to stay cool. Does anyone remember how cold that air-conditioner was? On hot summer days we would go in & out of there all day long.

Matt Keenan - you wanted to know about our crazy highschool rituals for ring day - Attended St. Raymond Academy 1972 -76 and I guess our ring day thing was not that unusual - we skated around Metropolitan Oval and ended up at McDonald's on Williamsbridge Road for our Senior-Ring Day breakfast.

The thing about the skating was that at the age of 18 I had forgotten everything I had known about skating (which I had done for hundred of hours up and down Leland Avenue when I was younger) and fell, really hard at Metropolitan Oval. My stocking were ripped, my knees bloody and this is how I went through the entire day, just totally embarrassing. Ring day was supposed to be the greatest day of our Senior year and I felt like a complete buffoon. I guess the moral of the story for us ladies is - always carry an extra pair of stockings for a a really important event!

My brothers Les & Bobby Sherwood always tell me to check on this site and I have from time to time but only see the younger crowd on. Maybe their's not too many of us old ones left.
I decided to write because my mouth is still watering from reading about those meat cakes. I can remember the rice pudding and potato salad as the best I ever had. When I got married to Jack (Jake) I think the first year that was our dinner at least once a week. I would send him down from Throggs Neck to pick up all my deli and it would take him all day to get back because he just couldn't pass Reilly's - after a while I got smart. I have such great memories and cherish so my dear friend from Archer Street.
Jack & I now live in Sebring, Fla. but go to our home in the Catskills for 4 to 5 months in the summer. Tina Brooks (Bappert) and her husband Bob live around the corner.
I have kept real close contact with Nancy Sprio (Reid) and Kate Schmidt (Irvine). And when I see any of the other friends I grew up with - it's like meeting a realtive - we just hug and kiss and cry and laugh and say do you remember ........!!!!
Tina & I were out the other night with friends and we were trying to remember the words to the song "We are the Archer girls, we wear our hair in curls ..... people just can't believe we are friends well over 60 year and when we have a few wines we always get on the subject of the old neighborhood. So if anyone remembers the words - please let me know.
Happy memories and a Happy & Healthy New year to all.

A couple of months ago I sent you a 1965 St. Anthony's
Class picture. I don't know how long it takes to get on the site but if there was a problem please let me know and I will mail it to you. Thanks for all the pictures. Loved the 1969 snow picture. I remember that storm well. It brought back the following memory. The day after the storm my Mom and I were walking on Beach Ave at the intersection of Guerlain when she slipped, went about 3'in the air and landed into a snowbank on her rear. I couldn't stop laughing.Luckily she didn't get hurt but was really ticked at me. I couldn't believe the obscenities that were flowing from her mouth. And to Brenda Behringer please send my regards to Celeste the next time you speak with her. She and I were in the same class at St. Anthony's and if my memory is correct the same homeroom at St. Helena's.
Wishing all of you a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Hi Everyone,
Glad things are picking up on this site, Hello Les Sherwood. As some may remember, our mother passed away May 26th. I was in NY for 5 days. On the last day I took a walking trip throught the old neighbor hood, (5 1/2 Hrs).
I went to NY for 10 days over the holidays. This last trip, I rented a car and brought a digital camera with me. I had a great time. Leslie, I remember the time someone threw the flash light battery and bounce off Balabans head, like something out of a road-runner cartoon. I think Balaban liked being teased and then he would chase us. I got to know him, better when I got older. I became an electrician and on occassions ran into him. He really was a good person and did a lot work for people even if they couldn't afford it. I remember when he use to chase us from the abandon houses before the "Playground" was built. I don't know why we teased him, just seemed like fun being chased by him. I don't think he ever hurt any-one. Well the neighborhood has changed dramatically. I've always had the fondest memories of growing up in that neighbor hood. I did the whole Bronx tour, stayed with my sister Marie in the Bronx, went up to Catskills to see my sister Dina and do some home repairs. She lives with her son, She married Kenny Nester, Kenny died Feb. 24, 2001 I don't think many people knew about his passing, we grew up together. Some might remember we had the Pigeons in the vacant lot before the "Playground" was built, then we had them in the lot opposite 1574 Beach Ave. I can only remember good times growing up in that neighborhood. Well Happy New Year to every-one. Pat Ferracano, Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Graduated from St Anthony's-1955

After a lull it's good to see a pickup in interesting stories.

Brenda Gay Behringer-Great story/facts about Balbam (for some reason I always remember his name as Balabam). And he had a first name-Jabob.

Do you think it's a good idea to list a date of graduation from grammar school? If class picture is posted then it is easy to relate a name to a face. We had so many kids in the neighborhood that with a two+ years difference in age many times one may know a face but not a name. E.G., Brenda must be at least 10 years younger than me but I went to so many Mud Bowls that we might have met each other sometime.
Talking about Mud Bowls I guess I played in my last game at ~46 years old. On this one ( of course not due to age) I was relegated to offensive and defensive line and there was at least 4-5 inches of mud and ice on Noble field. After the beating I took I was so sore
that on the Monday following I had to take a vacation day from job and went to local health club to soak in hot tub. As I gingerly I tried to get down into tub, a guy sitting there asked me: "What happened to you? Were you in a car accident? To which I replied "Worse" but it was difficult to explain what I was doing at my age. That was when an actual game was played.
I had an interesting week-end with my wife, son and his girlfriend who was visiting from Vermont.
The city was "electric" and mobbed with people, as most New Yorkers know, but I never went to Times Square for New Year. Declining to go with group to see the ball drop, I instead decided "to run" in the mid-night Frosty 4 Mile Run in Central Park ( Great experience with many people wearing costumes and a lot of young people having a lot of fun.) I had planned to fast walk the course but I got caugh up with the excitement of the thousand or so participating and I jogged it. After jogging for awhile, I rememered from my 1977 Marathon, the park is very hilly and a lot harder than the walking and hiking I have been doing as exercise. After I left the park around 1:30 at 72nd street I tried to get a taxi to hotel. No luck! The city was still packed with people and it seemed most had the same idea so I had to walk back to hotel on 39th and 6th. Of course I was a hurting dude the next 2-3 days . While I might seem a bit "masochist" I did have a great time, esp. the weather so mild, and would recommend it esp. to the younger group. New York city is something special.
From my viewpoint I enjoy the stories posted but I would enjoy more stories of Archer St experiences from those born in 30's and 40's.
Happy New to all!
Les Sherwood
P.S. Pls excuse the spelling and verbosity.

Happy New Year to everyone,

Some of you may remember Johnny "Truck" Truglio who lived next door to me on White Plains Road. Johnny was quite a "storyteller" and the best slider in the history of PS 102. "Truck" could start his slide halfway between third and home and the backstop was the only thing to stop him. Well I hear Johnny is retired and living in Delaware.

Anyway, my real reason for posting is Johnny' brother Frankie. Frankie Truglio has a band called "Stages" which performed at my niece's wedding (Bobby's daughter Pamela). I guess all those years prcticing the accordion under the watchful eye of Frankie's grandfather paid off. "Stages" is an amazing band and I never attended a wedding or affair where the music was so overwhelmingly complimented.

I plan on using them for my daughters wedding and recommend them highly to anyone in need of high class entertainment. They are not cheap but they are truly great. Another Stratton Parker who has done well. If anyone want's Frankie's number shoot me an e-mail.

Regards,

Jimmy Carolan

Hello All: See some new folks coming on Board that's great. Linda, thanks for your Holiday songs for Christmas and New Years, your always bringing something special to the site. Brenda Gay enjoyed your Mr. Balaban tidbits and story about Tessie and your middle name. I was just thinking about our High School days when most of us began our journey beyond the boundaries of Stratton Park. I was thinking about High School traditions like "Ring Day" and "Freshmen Day". I'm sure many of us have some intersting stories about the different High School Traditions. I was told about the girls at St. Helena's or Mnsgr. Scanlon having to do ridiculous things as Freshmen and ring day involved riding decorated bikes or roller skating to school etc. It would be fun if some of those experiences were shared here. Any takers. Thanks. All be well. Love, Peace and Happiness. Matty

Hi Lydia, Karl was my cousin who lived next door to me with his two sisters, Deborah and Carolyn. All three of them headed South to live in the warm weather one at at time. I miss them all terribly. We all used to have great times roller skating up and down the sidewalks. I remember Mrs Grundy who lived in the brick house right next door to us always screaming about us going up and down on her property making noise. We used to scream back that it wasn't her property the sidewalk belonged to the city. I can remember getting a talking to for being fresh to her. Does anyone else out there remember tying those skate keys around your neck for fear of loosing them and not being able to tighten up those skates when they got loose? Mr. Balban and his family were people to be remembered. I didnt realize that his wife was a school teacher years ago. I guess my mom had told me that when she was going through the changes she had a breakdown that caused her to stay in the house and never want to go out anymore. What a shame! There are so many great meds out there now that could have kept her a part of the community. She really was a sweet lady. My sister and I and cousin used to go up the steps and talk to her by her door. That would be as far as she would venture outside. We would only stay under Jacob (that is what she called Mr Balban) would pull in with his electrical truck then we all would take off in a flash. She would try to reassure us that he was harmless. He was just very loud. No amount of convincing would work on us. We had already heard too many stories from the older kids not to hang around. He was one of the best electricians in the city my parents had told me. They were immigrants from Russia that came to America educated themselves and made a life. Does anyone hear from Steve or his sister Cookie that lived at the end of the block? How about Theresa Flattery who lived in the big house next to the apartment buildings? Betty I saw your picture from the reunion you have not aged a day. You must share your secrets. Peggy Flynn the same goes for you. It was hard to recognize everyone. So, I just put names to who I thought the faces went to. Robert Hillman how are you? I can remember geeting into trouble for pushing you off the curb in grammar school because you were taking to long to get across the street. Then Raymond German and I had the battle of the book bags. He unfortunately was stronger then I and wacked me so hard I had a black and blue for weeks on my right hip. I'll get you Raymond. love to all Brenda

Happy New Year ! Looking forward to touching base with a lot of my old friends and classmates. How often I wonder where everyone is and what they are doing with their lives. Would love to share funny stories as often as possible and bring a smile to everyone's face. My middle name is a good start. Sister Theresa would not let me use Gay on my diploma. She said it was not a Catholic name . I tried to convince her that I was named after St. Gabriel. She wouldn't buy that one. Soooo- I had to use my confirmation name of Christine. I never forgave that woman and swore from that day forward I would use Gay on every legal document I ever signed. Only one of the many ways I fondly remember good ole Tessie. I laugh now when I think of the times that Sara Murullo and Linda Pepe use to flip their cartridge pens and splash her habit on the back as she passed by them. Back then I thought for sure they were going to burn in hell. Or how about the lion she used to have on her desk? When someone was bad you had to put your finger in his mouth so that he could bite you. Excellent! I recently overheard someone in the office the other day talking about the nuns and penmanship. Boy, did that bring back memories. We could be in the middle of a history lesson and because she couldn't understand the notes someone was writing or they weren't writing neat enough out came the penmanship book. It is amazing though, people will always ask when they look at my handwriting if I was taught by the nuns. But, let's not forget Mrs. Donahue and her oatmeal gun. Or , looking forward to Fridays and the Tootsie Roll pops she always had for us if we were good that week. Love being here and sharing with you all. Next edition will be some laughs about good ole Mr Balban- that should bring a chuckle to everyone's face. Remember- it was only my aunts house and that rickety metal fence that had a hundred pin holes that separated me from the trash can lid warrior. love to all Brenda Gay

Established in 2003, This page is a monument to a little spot in the Bronx called Stratton Park. Once the name of a thriving community, it describes a part of the Bronx situated between White Plains Road to the Bronx River Parkway, East Tremont Avenue and the Cross Bronx Expressway. The neighborhood was named for a real estate developer, John Stratton O'Leary, who starting in 1926 built blocks of apartment buildings that would become the heart of Stratton Park. His buildings were also known un-officially as the O'Leary Flats. The Purpose of this web site is to remember Stratton Park and to pay tribute to John O'Leary and the many others that made it a great place to live, work and play.
